Main research activities

The main aim of our team is to study human muscle and bone health as a priority issue in human medicine to sustain a disability-free life thanks to the modulating effects of diet. The scientific aim is to evaluate disturbances in muscle and bone mass/function, and their interactions both with other body compartments such as adipose tissue, and with diet, especially proteins, lipids and micronutrients. Our research is focused on:

1.  The mechanisms underlying cell metabolic disorders (lipotoxicity, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, inflammation), which trigger or attend illnesses.

2.  The dietary determinants and their mediating effects on these tissues (cellular and molecular aspects related to the metabolism of musculoskeletal tissues).

3.  The innovative strategies of prevention through integrated dietary approaches as appropriately indicated (ageing, chronic and metabolic illnesses, etc.), applications to healthy or ill persons to preserve mobility and quality of life, and reduce health risk (musculoskeletal disorders in chronic illnesses).
