Nutrition plays a major role in the prevention of physiopathologies such as obesity and sarcopenia. My PHD training was related to Nutrition and the role of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in metabolic alterations associated with obesity and insulin resistance. The aim was to compare the effects of omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, EPA and DHA) on adipose tissue and muscle metabolisms. As research engineer, I tried to explore the cross-talk between adipocytes and muscle cells and the effect of adipocyte insulin-resistance in this context. Through my research, I want to explore mechanisms and mediators involved in the dialogue between tissues to better understand their respective role in metabolic disorders related to obesity and sarcopenia. In september 2018, I have been recruited as assistant professor. I want to bring to the laboratory new approaches and theoretical aspects on Nutrition and cross-talk between tissues and to be innovative both in research and teaching.

Research Activities

During sarcopenia, the body composition is modified, with an increase in fat mass and a proportional decrease in lean mass (mainly muscle mass). Then metabolic alterations could be observed such as insulin resistance and low-grade inflammation. Mediators secreted by adipose and muscle cells might be involved in these alterations. Less is known about their effects on both adipocytes and muscle cells and the potential effects of nutritional strategies on their secretion. In the laboratory, I'm focusing my work on these points by developping co-culture and conditioned media assays to evaluate the cross-talk between adipocytes and differentiated muscle cells. Purification of mediators involved (miRNA, exosomes, lipids and proteins) would be realized to explore their role in metabolic alterations. These aspects are complementary to the expertise of the laboratory in terms of protein and lipid metabolisms. A first study we published demonstrated that secretion of insulin-resistant adipocytes was able to induce insulin resistance in differentiated skeletal muscle cells in vitro.
