Maintaining bone and muscle mass
To develop innovative nutritional strategies to prevent musculoskeletal disturbances

In developed countries, the increase in life expectancy  is associated with degenerative diseases that contribute to increase the constraints of public health systems. Aging is associated with the development of sarcopenia, which can be defined as the involuntary loss of muscle mass and function, and of osteoporosis, which leads to excessive fragility of the skeleton. These alterations are associated with an increased fat mass accumlulation and are in part responsible for the loss of mobility, frailty and increased morbidity in elderly. Furthermore, skeletal muscle atrophy and osteoporosis are often associated with pathological situations whose incidence increases with age and result in high hospitalization costs. Therefore, preventing muscle wasting and osteoporosis would help to maintain people's independence and health and reduce public health expenses.

    

Our main objective is to study musculoskeletal physiology and metabolism in order to allow a healthy life with appropriate dietary patterns or nutrient intakes. This research theme is organized around several research axes:

    

1) To understand the mechanisms and metabolic alterations responsible for muscle wasting and osteoporosis or their worsening during physio-pathological states (aging, obesity, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, catabolic states, etc.), in vivo (human, animal) and in vitro.

   

2) To develop innovative nutritional strategies to prevent musculoskeletal disturbances in the context of physiological (aging) or pathological (chronic diseases, metabolic diseases, etc.) states and apply these new strategies to healthy population or patients to preserve and/or restore their mobility and quality of life.
